UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, help meet their basic needs and expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

This assignment supports SDG 4: Quality Education by exploring how a digital tool can strengthen evidence-based planning and coordination for school connectivity and digital learning interventions.

02 / THE CONTEXT

A shared ambition for connected schools.

The Ministry of Education and Sports, UNICEF Uganda and Airtel Uganda are working together to advance equitable access to quality digital learning through improved school connectivity in Uganda.

The partnership aims to bridge the digital divide by enabling access to digital learning resources, strengthening digital skills and improving coordination among government, the private sector, development partners and education stakeholders.

As the initiative expands, a simple, user-friendly prototype can help stakeholders visualize how a future portal could support planning, monitoring, reporting and knowledge sharing.

03 / THE ASSIGNMENT

Develop a functional portal prototype.

The assignment seeks one Online Volunteer with web design, user interface design or web development experience, working remotely under the guidance of the project focal point and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

The volunteer contributes to a digital education initiative while strengthening a portfolio in user-centred design and learning how digital tools support school connectivity and quality education.

Activities in the supplied brief

1. Discuss and agree on the proposed structure, user needs and priority features with the project focal point and relevant stakeholders.
2. Prepare a sitemap and user journey illustrating how users may navigate the portal.
3. Design wireframes and interface layouts for the key portal pages.
4. Develop a functional prototype demonstrating sample dashboards, school profiles, a document repository and map-based visualization, using dummy or anonymized data.
5. Incorporate project-team feedback and refine the prototype accordingly.
6. Prepare a short handover note describing the prototype structure and recommendations for future development.

05 / THE OUTPUT

One coherent prototype package.

The original brief specifies one deliverable: a prototype package comprising a sitemap, wireframes or mock-ups of key pages, a basic clickable or functional prototype using dummy or anonymized data, and a short handover note with recommendations.

The final handover should identify implemented features, simulated integrations, known limitations and next development steps. Agreement on priorities and feedback from the project team remain part of stakeholder review.
